Rimkus Consulting Group Adds Toyota to Its Growing List of Crash Data Recovery Vehicles

Leading accident reconstruction firm now able to collect crash data
on 65 percent of all vehicles sold in the U.S.

Houston, TX  (August 23, 2011) – Rimkus Consulting Group, one of the world’s leading full-service, forensic engineering and accident reconstruction firms, has added Toyota to its list of vehicles compatible with the latest version of crash data recovery technology.  Toyota joins GM, Ford and Chrysler in being compatible with the crash data retrieval tool used by Rimkus, equating an ability to recover pre-crash data on 65 percent of all vehicles sold in the U.S.

Often referred to as a “black box,” a vehicle’s Event Data Recorder captures critical pre-collision information up to 5.0 seconds prior to an air bag deployment or non-deployment event.  Recoverable data can include vehicle speed, braking or not braking, accelerating or not accelerating, G-force of the impact, the direction of the impact, steering input, use or non-use of seat belts, air bag deployment, and if so, which air bag or air bags deployed and their timing.  The event data recorder has been shown to be an effective accident reconstruction tool even in incidents lacking much physical evidence.

“With the addition of Toyota to Rimkus’ line of vehicle manufacturers, we can provide critical crash analysis on the majority of  vehicles sold in the U.S. and we can even download Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles all the way back to 2006 models,” said Dr. Dirk Smith, Senior Vice President of Rimkus’ Forensic Division.   “Information captured by an event data recorder may be the most important third-party evidence in the entire accident investigation.  Event data recorders can provide an accurate history of pre-crash events exactly as they happened”

Crash data recorded in passenger vehicles is downloaded using a crash data retrieval tool to determine how the vehicle was operating before the accident  When requested, Rimkus can also produce computer-generated animation to help reconstruct the chain of events using the most effective data technology available.
