Rimkus Consulting Group, Inc. Expands Forensic Healthcare Technology Division

Leading forensic consulting firm launches medical device and healthcare technology practice to meet surging demand for review of healthcare and patient injury claims and legal disputes

HOUSTON, TX (September 23, 2011) - Rimkus Consulting Group, one of the world's leading full-service, forensic engineering firms, has expanded its Forensic Healthcare Technology Division to include Clinical Engineering to enhance its expertise in medical devices. The new group was created to provide Rimkus' clients a broader level of scientific expertise for the forensic examination of complex claims and legal disputes centering on medical technology and patient care environments.

The new practice will focus on medical device design and safety warning analysis; manufacturing errors and omissions assessments; injury causation biomechanics; medical equipment operation and use assessments; facility design and maintenance reviews; patient care environments and other issues related to patient injury accidents, medical device failures and intellectual property disputes.

The launch of the new practice is driven by a surging demand for examinations of claims and disputes centering on faulty design and manufacturing, technology incompatibility, or improper use and insufficient training. The Medical Device & Healthcare Technology practice is staffed with consultants specializing in clinical, biomedical, electrical and mechanical engineering.

"The Medical Device & Healthcare Technology practice offers real-world litigation experience in medical technology and the patient care environment," said Richard Baratta, Vice President, Rimkus Consulting Group. "In a practice area where claims and disputes range from cell phone interference with medical devices to defibrillator failure, ventilator alarm failure, improper operating table use and facility design error, Rimkus' consultants are qualified to render expert opinions in state and federal courts."

To grow the new practice, Rimkus named Richard J. Daken as its Medical Device & Healthcare Technology division manager. "Richard's history of experience in technical investigations and testimony toward resolution of commercial and personal injury litigation and failure analysis involving medical equipment and accompanying procedural issues within the hospital and patient care environments qualify Richard to lead this highly sophisticated practice toward its full potential," Baratta said.
