Their lectures will embrace a variety of topics, involving a number of disciplines that focus on forensic investigations to help meet the needs of risk managers, attorneys, and claims professionals.

National Events

CLM Southeast Conference
February 4, 2016 – Tampa, Florida

"Commercial Structural Fire Involving Suppression Systems and Identifying Subrogation" will examine commercial fire losses and the effect of fire suppression systems on fire spread and extinguishment. Case studies will be discussed, focusing on four primary areas of study: properly maintained fire suppression systems, improperly maintained systems, improperly modified systems, and intentionally defeated systems.

"Aquatic Accident Investigations: What can be done so you are not up the Lazy River without a Paddle " will provide building codes, standards, and regulations that apply to the design, construction of water attractions, and the standards and ordinances that apply to operation of the attractions. Participants will develop an understanding of considerations for managing risk and reducing liability associated with swimming pools, waterslides, splash pads, and other water attractions.

"Defending Bath Tub Fall Cases and other Unique Falls at Hotels, Restaurants and Retail Businesses" will discuss falls in hospitality and retail operations involving several different walking surfaces and locations, such as different types of flooring or floor covers, shower/tubs, walkways, gangways, parking lots, and resort facilities. Case studies of several accidents resulting in litigation will be presented and the panel will discuss the defense of these types of claims from the perspective of the client, the expert, and the defense attorney.

Hospitality Law Conference
February 22, 2016 – Houston, Texas

"Video Enhancement” will bepresented by Barbara Worsham, P.I., Vice President of the Rimkus Animation, Video and Graphics Practice Group. Her presentation will inform attendees on the process of video enhancement, the types of videos that can be enhanced, and the factors that influence the enhancement process. The course demonstrates what enhancement steps are possible versus what enhancement steps are only available in fiction (movies and television). Numerous examples from actual surveillance videos are shown throughout the presentation. Ms. Worsham’s areas of expertise include surveillance video enhancements, computer animations, and event reconstructions ranging from two-dimensional diagrams to complex three-dimensional accidents.

National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) Claims Conference
February 25, 2016 – Denver, Colorado

“Drones: How, What, and When” will be presented by TJ Cate, P.E., S.E., Western Region Division Manager with the Rimkus Construction Practice Group. Using drone footage as a learning tool, attendees will learn when the technology is best applied and what its limitations are. The discussion will also include a review of operational and workflow issues and the opportunity to see a drone in person. Mr. Cate is a licensed drone pilot and utilizes Rimkus’ fleet of quadcopter drones to assist with forensic investigations of property damage, fire inspections, catastrophic events, and vehicle accident investigations.

National Retail and Restaurant Defense Association (NRRDA) Annual Conference
March 2, 2016 – Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

"Choosing the Right Expert: Knowing That You Know You Don’t Know What You Should Know ” will provide attendees with a basic understanding of fire analysis and the detection of improper installation of manufactured fireplaces with respect to resolving subrogation issues involving fire-related claims. A representative case study will be presented that illustrates the application of these tools.

“HVAC Hail Damage – Sorting Fact from Fiction” will be presented by Jeffrey H. Peters, PE, LEED® AP BD+C, MAC, CEICC, CSDS, CMCC, Vice President of the Rimkus MEP Practice Group. His presentation considers hail damage and its effects on system performance, and methods for identifying what is real hail damage and what could be caused by something other than hail and how to determine the difference. January 29, 2016 – Dallas, Texas

“Residential/Light Commercial HVAC Construction Defects” will be presented by Jeffrey H. Peters, PE, LEED® AP BD+C, MAC, CEICC, CSDS, CMCC, Vice President of the Rimkus MEP Practice Group. This presentation is a one-hour program designed to provide attendees with a working knowledge of the basics of HVAC equipment and the means and methods used to discover residential and light commercial HVAC construction defects. Several case studies will be presented, discussing the types of defects, and methods to investigate and test for these defects.
