Drs. Richard Baratta and Dirk Smith to Speak at 2014 CLM Transportation Conference
Richard V. Baratta, Ph.D., P.E., and Dirk E. Smith, Ph.D., P.E., will both be speaking at the CLM Transportation Conference in Chicago on July 10, 2014, on issues related to vehicle accidents. The Claims and Litigation Management Alliance (CLM) is an organization that brings togeher claims management and ligitation management professionals in a collaboratitve and inclusive environment to further high standards in their work.
Dr. Baratta will present on the topic "Advent and Acceptance of Biomechanical Engineering Experts in Low Speed Impact Accidents." Baratta is a Vice President with Rimkus Consulting Group, Inc., and leads its Biomechanical Practice Group. He will address the growing presence of biomechanical engineers as experts in the courtroom, and the impact their opinions have on litigation. Dr. Baratta's engineering, research, and consulting background encompasses biomedical analysis of incidents involving low-speed accidents; pedestrian accidents; slip and falls; falling objects and other accidental events.
Dr. Smith's presentation is entitled "What the Driver Sees, or Doesn't See at Night." Smith is a Senior Vice President with Rimkus Consulting Group, Inc. and leads its National Forensic Practice Group. His presentation will focus on claims that a driver was "over driving his headlights," a common allegation against truck drivers. Additionally, he will discuss how discovery and trial should be conducted to account for the relevant human factors, including the design of headlights; factors determining stopping distance; FMCSRs regulations for night driving; discovery tools and trial tactics.
