Toxicology, Consumer Product and Food Safety

Toxicology

Toxicology is the scientific study of adverse effects that may result from exposure to chemical, biological, or radiological agents that may be present in consumer and industrial products, in the workplace, or in the environment.  Toxicology involves characterizing and quantifying the association between exposure to a substance and the magnitude of effects on human health and/or the environment.  The need for scientifically robust assessments of toxicological information arises in numerous contexts relevant to our clients.

Rimkus experts have significant experience in providing analyses to evaluate health effects associated with a variety of chemical, biological, drug, and alcohol exposures.  We effectively communicate those complex scientific matters to a wide variety of audiences.  Typical toxicological projects include an evaluation of existing data (e.g. health records, exposure data), critically evaluating toxicological and human health literature, reviewing all potential exposure pathways, considering alternative causes, determining the validity of the claim based on scientific literature, developing comprehensive analyses and reports, and communicating results to clients.

We bring extensive experience in the following project areas:

  • Critical Evaluation of Toxicological, Clinical, and Epidemiological Studies
  • Evaluating the Safety of Chemicals, Medical Devices, Drugs, and Consumer Product Ingredients
  • Expert Support in Toxic Tort Cases
  • Drug and Alcohol Claims Evaluation
  • Exposure Assessment
  • Occupational Exposure
  • Risk Assessment
  • Evaluation of Regulatory Guidelines for Chemicals
  • Pharmaceutical Assessments

Consumer Product Safety

Concerns about health risks associated with chemical exposures from a variety of consumer products have been expressed by consumers and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for decades. Examples of the types of consumer products that have raised concerns include plastics, cosmetics and personal care products, toys, dishware/cookware, cleaning products, antibacterial products, home improvement and building materials, food, packaging, gasoline and fuel additives, and pesticides. Questions about consumer product safety have been stimulated by the media, regulations from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, product liability litigation, NGO reports, and by the regulation of specific chemicals under state regulations such as California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control’s “Proposition 65” and “Safer Consumer Products” Acts.   Rimkus staff members have extensive experience with assisting clients to evaluate health risks posed by ingredients in a wide variety of consumer products.

Food Safety

There are a number of areas within the food industry where there is the potential for consumer exposure to substances that may be viewed as potential health hazards and may result in significant claims of injury.  Our toxicologists and certified industrial hygienists can evaluate these claims from a health risk perspective with respect to the toxicology of the substances involved, exposure evaluation, and the merits of the allegations of harm.  Food safety evaluations may be conducted to evaluate health claims, product adulteration, food contamination, or product spoilage. Rimkus food safety experts assist clients with a wide range of food safety related projects, including the following examples:

  • Identification of the nature and cause of food contamination from raw materials handling, food processing, food service, and packaging
  • Microbial investigation and source evaluation in food processing, storing or handling facilities
  • Review of food production processes in relationship with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP)
  • Recommendation of modifications to procedures, production processes and quality control systems to avoid recurrence of food contamination events
  • Assessment of the reasonableness of product recalls
  • Conduct of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) reviews, sanitation inspections
  • Investigation of off-flavor or off-specification food products
  • Assist in food and pharmaceutical adulteration and integrity claims that may involve excessive temperature excursions, microbial contamination, bodily fluid, or animal waste contamination
