Toxicology is the scientific study of adverse effects that may result from exposure to chemical, biological, or radiological agents that may be present in consumer and industrial products, in the workplace, or in the environment.  Toxicology involves characterizing and quantifying the association between exposure to a substance and the magnitude of effects on human health and/or the environment.  The need for scientifically robust assessments of toxicological information arises in numerous contexts relevant to our clients.

Consumer Product Safety

Concerns about health risks associated with chemical exposures from a variety of consumer products have been expressed by consumers and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for decades. Examples of the types of consumer products that have raised concerns include plastics, cosmetics and personal care products, toys, dishware/cookware, cleaning products, antibacterial products, home improvement and building materials, food, packaging, gasoline and fuel additives, and pesticides. Questions about consumer product safety have been stimulated by the media, regulations from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, product liability litigation, NGO reports, and by the regulation of specific chemicals under state regulations such as California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control’s “Proposition 65” and “Safer Consumer Products” Acts.   Rimkus staff members have extensive experience with assisting clients to evaluate health risks posed by ingredients in a wide variety of consumer products.  

Food Safety

There are a number of areas within the food industry where there is the potential for consumer exposure to substances that may be viewed as potential health hazards and may result in significant claims of injury.  Our toxicologists and certified industrial hygienists can evaluate these claims from a health risk perspective with respect to the toxicology of the substances involved, exposure evaluation, and the merits of the allegations of harm.  Food safety evaluations may be conducted to evaluate health claims, product adulteration, food contamination, or product spoilage.
